Glaetzer Heartland Stickleback Red Blend 2021 14.5% vol. South Australia
HEARTLAND WINES. THE TOP WINES OF THE SHOOTING STAR.
Heartland Wines is a joint venture of seven young people who came together in 2001 to turn their passion for good wines into a joint endeavour. The name of their newly founded winery expresses how much this project is close to their hearts: Heartland.
The Chief Winemaker at the head of the dedicated team is none other than Ben Glaetzer, scion of the famous Glaetzer family of winemakers. Bursting with self-confidence and determination, the wine-holic has not only managed to win over the national trade press, but has also attracted the attention of wine pope Robert M. Parker.
Parker describes: Ben Glaetzer admirably combines the enormous fruit and power of old vines with a surprising degree of elegance and complexity.
Langhorne Creek is the oldest cool-climate region in Australia and much cooler than the neighbouring regions of McLaren Vale and Barossa - for a very simple reason: it is located in an old floodplain on the northern shore of Lake Alexandrina. As such, it is completely flat and, unlike the regions on the other side of the Mount Lofty mountain range, is exposed to the prevailing winds for better or worse.
The wind comes from the southern ocean in the early evening and cools the entire region by around 10°C within an hour. This in turn produces cool nights and creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Because the wind has such a profound effect on local viticulture, it is also affectionately known among winegrowers as the Lake Doctor. Incidentally, the oldest registered Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world grow here. This is due to the fortunate circumstance that there has never been a phylloxera infestation here.
