Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz 2019 14.5 % vol. Barossa Valley, South Australia
LEGENDARY FAMILY BUSINESS.
The Glaetzers are one of Australia's oldest winegrowing families. They arrived in Adelaide on a steamship from Hamburg in 1888 and settled in the fertile Barossa Valley.
As Brandenburgers, viticulture was as foreign to them as their new home - but it seemed just as promising. With courage, drive and plenty of pioneering spirit, they laid the foundations for what is now a legendary family business.
The current head of the family is Colin Glaetzer and is one of Australia's most famous winemakers. He has done an enormous amount for viticulture in his home country, but even more for the continued existence of the Glaetzer wine dynasty. Colin's wife Judith was a trained oenologist. So are his three sons. And even two of their wives. After three decades as a winemaker in large Australian wineries, Colin decided to set up his own winery in 1995 at the height of his career in order to devote himself to the small, ultimate fine wines.
Super premium wines with a distinct terroir character in strictly limited quantities are the impressive result. While Colin was responsible for the first vintages himself, his son Ben now makes the excellent wines.
Ben is one of Australia's most talented winemakers, co-founder of Heartland Wines and former co-owner of Mitolo Wines. The best Shiraz comes from the famous Barossa vineyard Ebenezer and is harvested from 80 to 110-year-old vines.
The yields are homeopathic. The concentration of flavours in the grapes is gigantic. Ben turns them into a wine that is fabulously fruity, incredibly smooth and highly elegant.
